Is the service stable even in bad weather?

It was previously thought that bad weather could be a major obstacle to implementing Ka-band satellite systems. Indeed, because of the strong attenuation of the signal level it is extremely difficult to guarantee a high quality service. For Tooway satellite terminals have introduced a technology that reduces attenuation caused by rain: the system automatically responds to the controlling power of the uplink signal, and adaptive data coding techniques ( ACM Adaptive Coding and Modulation ) that overcome potential outages, while optimizing the use of satellite transponder bandwidth. All this makes the Tooway ™ network much more reliable than other two-way satellite services available in Europe for private users.

How do you configure the router ?

In order to configure any Ethernet device, in other words either a router or a computer connected to a Tooway ™ modem, the device needs to be equipped for the automatic assignment of the IP address and DNSs by the Tooway ™ network. The system will not work or will perform badly if the connession is configured with a defined IP.

What technology does Tooway™ use?

Tooway™ is based on the SurfBeam® DOCSIS® two-way broadband satellite transmission system from ViaSat . It is different from other satellite broadband internet services as the system requires no landline or cable connection. The SurfBeam system is common in North America and counts more than 250.000 users. It is an open standard, highly scalable platform that significantly reduces the cost for the user of the terminals and services provided, because it exploits the technology of cable modem networks using DOCSIS 1.1, a widely-used  open standard. In order to adapt this standard to satellite, ViaSat developed a satellite terrestrial interface which has been perfectly integrated into the terminal systems of the distributor centre.

How long are time delays during satellite transmission?

Geostationary satellites are located in orbit at approximately 36.000 kms above the equator. The data takes about 250 msec to travel to and from the satellite and the latency of the 2-way protocol is approximately 600 msec, including the SurfBeam system latency. In order to reduce latency, which affects TCP and browsing speeds, a PEP (Performance Enhancing Proxy) and a Web accelerator have been integrated into the SurfBeam modem and the DOCSIS system of the distributing centre.

Which frequency band does Tooway™ use?

Tooway ™ operates in Ku and Ka bands. The Ka band is managed by HOT BIRD ™ 6 from Eutelsat at 13 ° East, while the Ku-band is managed by EUROBIRD ™ 3 at 33 ° East. In 2010 Eutelsat started deploying a dedicated satellite for the Ka band with more spotbeams across Europe, within the transmission zone of its satellite HOT BIRD ™ (13 ° East).

What is Ka-band and what are the benefits?

Broadcasting satellites mainly operate in Ku-band frequencies, which have the advantage of offering wide geographical coverage. The Ka band, which has recently started being used also for Europe, has additional benefits: The ITU allocates to each satellite a greater Ka bandwidth (1 GHz per orbital slot). For dedicated two-way communications, spot beam technology allows for extensive reuse of the frequency, which makes it possible to significantly reduce the cost of the spectrum. Greater bandwidth means higher transmission rates, thus supporting higher peak speeds for individual users. The higher frequencies of the Ka band make it possible to use smaller antennas.

Who manages the operation of the platform?

Management activities of the platform and hub for the Tooway™ network are carried out in the SkyPark teleport in Turin, and are the responsibility of Skylogic, the Eutelsat company that deals with broadband services. There are over 50 Skylogic employees who manage 14 hubs that use the capacity provided by the eight Eutelsat satellites . The teleport includes dedicated staff who are responsible for ensuring maximum service availability.
